Live Wedding Watercolor Painting at The Red House: My First Live Couple Portrait

As an artist who has spent years creating custom portraits and recently quick live guest illustrations, stepping into the world of live wedding painting felt both exciting and slightly intimidating.

Recently, I had the opportunity to complete my very first Live Couple Watercolor Painting at the iconic Red House Seafood, and it was an experience I’ll never forget.

Painting Live in Watercolor

For this piece, I spent about four hours painting live during the celebration, arriving 30 mins earlier to set up my materials and prepare my composition before guests arrived.

One thing many people don’t realise is that watercolor is probably one of the most challenging mediums to paint live. Unlike acrylic or oil paints, watercolor offers very little room for correction. Every brushstroke requires intention, and timing is crucial as layers need to dry before new details can be added.

But that’s also what I love most about it.

The softness and fluidity of watercolor are what make it perfect for weddings. It naturally reflects emotion, atmosphere, and intimacy in a way that feels light, romantic, and timeless.

More Than Just a Couple Portrait

My approach to live wedding painting goes beyond simply painting the couple. While the couple remains the heart of the artwork, I also believe the venue, décor, and meaningful details are what transform a portrait into a true wedding keepsake.

For this painting, I featured the couple sharing a quiet moment together against their beautiful floral backdrop. Surrounding them are details that makes their celebration unique, like details of the distinctive wall motifs of The Red House, the restaurant logo, and the wedding date incorporated into the artwork.

These elements may seem small, but years from now, they will help bring back memories of the celebration, the venue, and the atmosphere that made the day unique.

Capturing the Feeling of the Day & the Venue

Red House Seafood Grand Copthorne is known for its distinctive charm and warm, heritage-inspired atmosphere, making it a beautiful setting for a wedding celebration. I did a site visit prior to the painting day to familiarise the venue.

As an artist, I was especially drawn to the textures, patterns, and mood of the space, all of which influenced how I approached this painting. Instead of isolating just the couple, I wanted the artwork to reflect the full experience of being there. The venue, the design, and the emotional energy of the day.

Why Live Wedding Watercolor Painting Matters

One of the reasons I am drawn to live wedding painting is that it allows guests to witness the artwork evolve throughout the celebration. What begins as a blank sheet slowly transforms into a meaningful keepsake before their eyes.

Live wedding painting is more than just entertainment. It becomes part of the wedding experience itself.  Guests get to witness the artwork evolve throughout the celebration, and by the end of the event, the couple leaves with a one-of-a-kind artwork created in real time.

As I continue exploring live wedding watercolor painting, I look forward to creating more pieces that celebrate not just the couple, but the places, details, and stories that make each wedding uniquely theirs.

If you’re considering a live wedding watercolor artist in Singapore, or want something more personal than photography alone, I would love to bring your celebration to life through paint.
