When planning a birthday celebration, one of the biggest questions is always: what kind of entertainment will actually feel memorable and different?
In Singapore, many birthday parties still lean towards the usual options, balloon sculpting, photobooths, magic shows, face painting or caricature artists. But recently, I had the opportunity to bring something a little different to a baby birthday celebration at Gardens by the Bay 🌿
Instead of caricatures, I provided live guest portrait illustrations and it completely changed how guests experienced the event.
A birthday celebration at Gardens by the Bay 🌸
Set against the beautiful greenery of Gardens by the Bay, this baby birthday celebration was designed to feel warm, intimate, and meaningful.
Rather than focusing only on décor and photography, the family wanted something that guests could take home, something personal that would last beyond the event itself. That’s where live portrait illustration came in.
We designed a custom template that matches the theme of the birthday celebration as well as the venue.

What are live guest portraits?
Live guest portraits are hand-drawn illustrations created on-site during an event.
Unlike caricatures, which often exaggerate facial features for humour, live portrait illustration focuses on:
- A clean, stylised representation of each guest
- A more thoughtful and aesthetic art style
- A keepsake that feels personal and display-worthy
Each portrait is drawn within minutes and given directly to guests during the event. Guests are often surprised by how meaningful it feels to receive a portrait that actually resembles them in a refined, artistic way. Many choose to frame it after the event (we can provide frames too!)
Why live portraits work beautifully for birthday parties
While live illustration or live portraits or live caricature is commonly associated with weddings or corporate events, it also works incredibly well for birthday celebrations, especially milestone events like:
- First birthdays
- One-year-old celebrations (for family + guests)
- Kids’ birthdays with a mixed-age guest list
- Family-focused gatherings
Here’s why it works:
1. It doubles as entertainment and a gift
Guests get to watch their portrait being drawn and take it home instantly.
2. It creates a personal connection
Each guest receives something made specifically for them.
3. It suits all ages
From grandparents to friends, everyone enjoys the experience.
4. It becomes a keepsake from the event
Unlike typical party activities, the memory continues long after the celebration ends.

A meaningful alternative to typical birthday entertainment ideas
If you’re searching for birthday entertainment ideas in Singapore, it’s easy to fall into the usual list of options.
But live guest portraits offer something different. A slower, more thoughtful experience that guests don’t just watch, but participate in.
It becomes part of the celebration itself, not just a side activity.
This experience at Gardens by the Bay reminded me that live illustration isn’t limited to weddings or corporate events. It fits beautifully into birthday celebrations too especially when the goal is to create something meaningful and memorable for guests.
If you’re planning an event and looking for something beyond the usual entertainment options, live guest portraits might be the unique touch you didn’t know you needed ✨
