Wedding Caricature at CHIJMES: A black & white film-inspired portrait experience

There’s something about weddings at CHIJMES that feels quietly cinematic.

Maybe it’s the soft light that filters through the arches, or the way the white walls reflect every movement with a certain stillness. It naturally lends itself to a different kind of storytelling... one that feels less posed, and more like a frame from a film.

For this wedding, the couple wanted to create something that complemented that atmosphere.

A Modern Approach to Wedding Caricature in Singapore

When people think of wedding caricatures, they often imagine bold, colourful, exaggerated sketches. Instead of the usual colours, we went with a black and white portrait doodle, inspired by film photography.

Think:

  • Soft contrast
  • Minimal lines
  • Subtle expressions over exaggeration
  • Almost like a still pulled from an old roll of film

Each portrait was drawn with restraint, focusing on capturing presence rather than punchlines. The result felt less like a caricature, and more like a keepsake sketch you’d find tucked inside a notebook or an old envelope of photographs.

Why Black & White Worked So Well

CHIJMES already carries a strong visual identity:clean, elegant, and timeless. Adding bold colours would have competed with the space.
Black and white, on the other hand, blended in effortlessly.

Guests weren’t just receiving a drawing. They were taking home a small piece of the wedding’s mood.

Guest Experience — More Than Just Entertainment

Throughout the evening, guests would stop by, watch the portraits come to life, and leave with something personal.

Some smiled at how they were captured. Some wander over out of curiosity. Others kept it close, like a quiet souvenir.

It became less about entertainment, and more about creating a moment of pause, something intimate within a busy celebration.

A Keepsake That Lasts Beyond the Wedding

In a digital-heavy world, physical keepsakes carry a different weight.

This black and white was the couple's way of bringing that grounding feeling into their celebration. A slower, softer interpretation of wedding portraiture.

Wedding Caricature in Singapore, Reimagined

This project reflects a growing shift where couples are looking for experiences that feel more personal, more aesthetic, more aligned with their wedding mood.

A black and white, film-inspired caricature is not about exaggeration.
It’s about capturing presence, quietly.

If you’re planning a wedding at CHIJMES or a similar venue, and looking for something more understated yet meaningful, this style of live portraiture offers a different kind of presence... one that lingers even after the day ends.
